Back to Motion - Great Atmosphere

This is a weird posting for me to write. The therapist that I saw today is a recent graduate of mine who is now practicing in this little chiropractic location in NW Calgary. Not only was she a student that I taught, but also worked at my student clinic, and I have a lot of respect for her.. I have been unsure if I wanted to write about my session today, but feel that it would be constructive all around.

First off... it was a great session.

I came into Back to Motion Chiropractic offices this afternoon. It is located in a large strip mall, and is just beside a large grocery store. Not what I was expecting, but it did not feel that way once I stepped inside.  The ambiance was quite nice, and although I tend to see chiro offices as stuffy, quite sterile and "office-y", this had a great feel about it. Warm colors, clean floors, friendly front desk staff and Sirius radio "coffee house" music piped into the waiting area.. all nice touches.  I promptly filled out my health history form, visited the little girls room, and then into the massage room.   At first, I was surprised at the coolness of the room. Tiled floors are not my favorite. They lend to a cooler feel and generally are a bit hard to work on. However, the table warmer, the warm tones on the walls and the heated thermophore made the chill disappear.

My therapist, friendly as ever, did a great job of honing in on what needed to be accomplished during my session (which was more that I like to bring to the table, but really.. 3 kids, working 2-3 jobs and not having time for a massage lends itself to stiff muscles) and then we began the massage.

It is hard for me to "critique" my massage, mostly because my concerns were addressed. It was a good massage. It achieved my goals, and dealt with my problem areas. I think what I missed was the relaxation component. It is not that it was not a good massage, but I expect a little bit of the massage to be more relaxation and not just therapy. The techniques that tend to bring that feeling into the massage include basic effleurage, repetitive kneading and compressions/rockings.  Again, the massage was good, it was just that I think a little more incorporating all of the techniques together may have helped me relax more, and in the end, release the muscular tension more effectively.  These are all things that do come together in time, and really make a more complete session, but I do feel so much better after my session and I thank my therapist for that!!! For sure!!

If this clinic was anywhere near my home, I would look at making it a regular stop for my massages, although, I hope that it starts to be noticed more in the NW communities, as it is really a hidden gem.

Thanks again to everyone at Back to Motion who made my appointment a pleasurable experience!!

  1. Interesting site! I have recently been getting into massage therapy to help me relax. Check out www.lakesidespa.ca Last week my friend got a massage in Calgary there, and had nothing but positive things to say.

  2. Hi James.. Thank you for your comment. I actually have been to Lakeside Spa, and unfortunately, did not have a great session there.. at least at that one visit. If you look through my other posts, you will notice that although it is a nice atmosphere, my visit was underwhelming.
